Let's Begin:

September 2025

21.  Douglas Day will be September 21st at Barker Hangar.- in 1924, Donald Douglas and his team from Santa Monica achieved a historic milestone with the first flight around the world. Operating from Clover Field, the U.S. Army Air Service’s Douglas World Cruisers—Seattle, Chicago, Boston, and New Orleans—completed a journey of over 27,553 miles, traversing oceans, continents, and difficult terrains. This remarkable feat showcased their courage and pioneering spirit, culminating in a grand return to Santa Monica in September 1924, where 250,000 people greeted them. The success of this mission cemented Donald Douglas and his company’s place in global innovation history.

22. - 29.  (Cancelled) The Commemorative Air Force Museum Southern California Wing, which is based at Camarillo Airport, will be welcoming the B-17 Sentimental Journey tour the week of September 22nd. The tour is scheduled to end Monday, September 29th. - Residents can expect to see the Douglas B-17 Flying Fortress operational in the Ventura County area during its visit. One of only three B-17s in the world that are still flying, the aircraft can be expected to be seen flying lower and slower than what residents may see from other aircraft, which is typical for a B-17. The aircraft’s unique engine will also produce a different sound than what residents may typically hear. - The Sentimental Journey tour is offering both ground tours and flights beginning Wednesday.  [Event%20Archives%20-%20CAF%20SoCal] Click here to learn more. How many learn how to fly without instruments at all? Being able to control an airplane solely by visual references is important, especially when you are operating VFR.  We will discuss the importance of sight pictures, feel, and also basic techniques for pilotage using ground references. - Location of Seminar: Chandler Airport Passenger Terminal, 2380 S. Stinson Way, Chandler, AZ 85286 - Registration Information:  Click here to register online now!

Rowell, FAA Safety Team Program Manager - Brief Description: A ramp inspection is defined as surveillance of an airman, operator, air agency, or aircraft, which may include conducting maintenance record inspections sufficient to show compliance with 14 CFR during actual operations at an airport or heliport. Ramp inspections may result when the inspector:

  1. Observes an unsafe operation in the traffic pattern or on the ramp.
  2. Receives notification from air traffic control (ATC) of an unsafe operation.
  3. Observes obvious discrepancies that may affect the airworthiness of the aircraft.
  4. Conducts routine surveillance activities.

This seminar will review the items and documents that will be inspected and reviewed during a Ramp Inspection on your aircraft. - If you're properly prepared, an FAA ramp check should be a routine procedure. Knowing what to do, what not to do, and what is expected of you should help reduce your anxiety about them.  - Location of Seminar: San Carlos Flight Center, 795 Skyway Rd, Suite A, San Carlos, CA 94070  -  Registration Information: Click here to register online now!

It is possible to spend multiple lifetimes in various careers under the “umbrella” of weather.

This course aims to introduce us to some basic weather concepts, and how we can leverage the knowledge of those who DO have careers in weather to keep us safe in flight.

Two major resources we will be using are:

1. Aviation Weather Handbook (FAA-H-8083-28A), available for free as a pdf from the FAA.

2. The website: aviationweather.gov

October 2025

1.  Landing Secrets Revealed - Landing philosophy and insider tips on landing stemming from his thousands of hours of instruction in nosewheel aircraft.- Wednesday, October 1, 2025, starting at 19:00 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File - Speaker(s): Dan Dyer, Chief Pilot - In some ways, learning to fly is largely about learning to land. Pilots of small planes need to perform at least one safe landing on nearly every flight. It’s the type of skill that is learned once and then perfected for the rest of a pilot’s life. How are your landings? Would you like to hear a few secrets to landing that can help you improve your landing ability?

Join SCFC Chief Pilot Dan Dyer for a discussion about landing philosophy and some insider tips on landing stemming from his thousands of hours of instruction in nosewheel aircraft. Learn about the two halves of the flare, the actual role of the pilot (you may be surprised!), how important it is to look good, and the critical importance of time spent at altitude playing with the horizon. This presentation may be of value to student pilots working on learning to land for the first time, but it also may offer insights to experienced pilots and CFIs looking to take their landing ability to the next level.

Location of Seminar:
San Carlos Flight Center
795 Skyway Rd
Suite A
San Carlos, CA 94070
Registration Information: Click here to register online now!

2.  Your Engine Monitor is Speaking to You - Do You Understand It? - How to use your Engine Monitor from startup through cruise and understanding what its trying to tell you. - Thursday, October 2, 2025, starting at 18:30 Pacific Daylight Time (19:30 MDT; 20:30 CDT; 21:30 EDT; 15:30 HST; 17:30 AKDT; 18:30 Arizona; Friday, October 3, 2025 01:30 GMT)- Speaker(s): Paul Kortopates CFI, A&P/IA & Lead FAASTeam Rep - Our engine monitors provide a wealth of information that not only helps us fly more efficiently but can also provide engine saving information and even life saving help. If we understand what its telling us, an engine monitor can give plenty of advance warning before an engine fails in flight allowing us to get on the ground safely without mishap. And more often than not, being able to recognize what's happening empowers us to take action to prevent an issue progressing to significant damage. But we need to incorporate it in our scan and learn what its telling us. We'll cover Best Practices on using a modern engine analyzer in different phases of flight including how to lean a normally aspirated engine for high density altitude takeoff and in climb as well as leaning for Lean of Peak (LOP) and Rich of Peak (ROP) cruise. Additionally we'll discuss a wide range of engine anomalies including partially blocked injectors, sticking valve a.k.a. morning sickness, weak spark, mistimed mags, pre-ignition and more with pictures. - Webinar Information
