Let's Begin:

October 2026

24.  "Hangar Talk Saturdays (KVNY) - Collision Avoidance and Situational Awareness"
Topic: Mid-Air Collision Prevention, Bird Strike Avoidance, and Situational Awareness
On Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 09:00 Pacific Daylight Time
Location:
LA Flight Academy
7900 Balboa Blvd
G6 Prop Park West
Van Nuys, CA 91406

Description:Whether sharing the sky with another aircraft or encountering a flock of birds, how much time will you have to recognize the danger and react? Mid-air collisions and bird strikes present different challenges, but both demonstrate the importance of situational awareness, effective scanning, and timely decision making.

This seminar examines the causes and prevention of mid-air collisions and bird strikes, including visual scanning techniques, traffic pattern operations, radio communications, right-of-way rules, ADS-B capabilities and limitations, bird activity near airports, and wildlife hazards during critical phases of flight. Through accident examples and practical scenarios, attendees will explore techniques for recognizing potential conflicts, reducing exposure to hazards, and responding appropriately when avoidance is no longer possible.  -  To view further details and registration information for this seminar, click here.

28.  Flying Safely at Night

Topic:
Refresher on the Regulations, Airport Operations, and Human Factors Involved in Night Flying
Date and Time:
Wednesday, October 28, 2026, starting at 19:00 Pacific Daylight Time Download Calendar File
Speaker(s):
Herb Patten, CFI
Brief Description:  On November 1st, Daylight Savings Time will end, and with it comes early nightfall. For those of us who work a regular 9-5 schedule, early nightfall means an increase in night flying time. How current are your night skills? Maybe it’s time to focus on what is different between day VFR and night VFR flight.  -  Obviously, less ambient light adds challenges for anything requiring eyesight. This includes preflight inspection, taxi safety, obstruction avoidance, IMC recognition and avoidance, cockpit resource management, and a number of other things. Most familiar to pilots is probably the differences in landing. The sight picture of a normal approach to a runway is very different with reduced external visual cues from night.  -  Night flight brings with it reduced ATC workloads, often calmer winds, cooler temperatures that help performance, and the ability to spot traffic from further out. Your decision about flying at night can be aided by attending a Night Flying Refresher seminar like this one.
Location of Seminar:
San Carlos Flight Center
800 Skyway Rd
Portable Office (Classroom)
San Carlos, CA 94070

On Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 09:00 Pacific Daylight Time
Location:
LA Flight Academy
7900 Balboa Blvd
G6 Prop Park West
Van Nuys, CA 91406

Description:  How much ice does it take to turn a perfectly capable airplane into one that can no longer maintain controlled flight? Structural icing can dramatically reduce lift, increase drag, alter stall characteristics, and compromise aircraft performance. Understanding how ice forms, where it is encountered, and how quickly conditions can deteriorate is essential for pilots operating in colder weather.

This seminar examines the causes and dangers of structural icing, including atmospheric conditions conducive to ice formation, different types of airframe ice, aircraft performance degradation, icing forecasts and reports, and the capabilities and limitations of ice protection systems. Through accident case studies and practical scenarios, attendees will explore preflight planning strategies, recognizing developing icing conditions, and making timely decisions to avoid or escape hazardous situations. -  To view further details and registration information for this seminar, click here.

5. "Saturday Morning Coffee and WINGS - Cognitive Overload!"
Topic: What's Your Threshold?
On Saturday, December 5, 2026 at 09:00 Central Standard Time (07:00 PST; 08:00 MST; 10:00 EST; 05:00 HST; 06:00 AKST; 08:00 Arizona; 15:00 GMT)  -  Join us for a VIRTUAL cup of coffee, a donut, and a LIVE WEBINAR as Brian talks with us about cognitive overload.  As pilots, we know that when we exceed a wing’s critical angle of attack, the wing will stall and lose lift . Likewise, a pilot’s mind has a cognitive load threshold which, once exceeded, will result in degradation of the pilot’s performance. In some cases, performance degradation caused by cognitive overload can be severe enough to result in a pilot’s loss of control of their aircraft.

We will explore cognitive overload, it's causes and how to reduce our likelihood of encountering it.  Learn how to manage cognitive load while staying in control of your aircraft at all times!  - Aviation safety will be discussed, and is central to the content of this presentation. - Many of our sessions are recorded and can be viewed on our YouTube channel Saturday Morning Coffee and WINGS.  Credit is not available if viewing the recording. -  Here is a link:  Saturday Morning Coffee and WINGS YouTube channelT   -  To view further details and registration information for this webinar, click here.
