8. "Flight Instructor Update Recency of Experience Requirements"
Topic: Discussion of Flight Instructor Currency Requirements
On Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 19:00 Central Daylight Time (17:00 PDT; 18:00 MDT; 20:00 EDT; 14:00 HST; 16:00 AKDT; 17:00 Arizona; Thursday, July 9, 2026 00:00 GMT) Description: Historically, flight instructor certificates were issued for a period of 24 calendar months, and specific training or activity levels were required for their renewal. Two years ago, a significant rule change occurred. Now, flight instructor certificates (like pilot certificates) never expire. However, to remain active, a CFI must now satisfy a recency of experience requirement. As the last of the two-year CFI certificates are just now expiring, it’s time to review this rule change. In this webinar CFI Prof. H. Paul Shuch explores ways for CFIs to satisfy the current recency of experience requirements. - To view further details and registration information for this webinar, click here.

"The Schiff Show - No Plan No Out - When Night Flying Goes Dark" - Topic: See Where This Flight Went Off the Rails, and How to Ensure Your Next Night Flight Doesn’t Become an Accident Report. - On Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 19:00 Central Daylight Time (17:00 PDT; 18:00 MDT; 20:00 EDT; 14:00 HST; 16:00 AKDT; 17:00 Arizona; Friday, July 10, 2026 00:00 GMT) - A night flight, a 300-foot ceiling, four miles in mist—and a young private pilot pressing on without a flight plan, clearance, or a real “out.” In this episode of THE SCHIFF SHOW, we dissect a Cessna 172’s collision with terrain and show how smart procedures, solid stick-and-rudder techniques, and today’s cockpit technology could have turned a near-tragedy into a non-event.
Key Learning Objectives
- How one missing step in preflight planning turned “legal” into “lethal risk” in a matter of minutes.
- The simple stick-and-rudder technique that can save your life when you lose the horizon at low altitude.
- The underused cockpit tech that would have given this pilot an escape route instead of a rescue.

In this six-part webinar series, we will explore how to conduct a comprehensive annual inspection, helping mechanics and inspectors (IA) avoid common pitfalls.
We'll cover Pre-Inspection Paperwork, Pre-Run Inspection, and a thorough physical inspection of the Propeller, Engine, and Airframe. Adhering to the scope and detail of FAR 43 Appendix D. The series will guide you on assembling a discrepancy list, determining when to consult the owner, ordering and receiving parts, conducting a post-maintenance inspection, completing post-inspection paperwork, performing a Post Inspection Run-Up, and inspecting all items. Finally, we'll discuss how to sign off the aircraft and deliver it to the owner.
Background:
Inadequate maintenance and inspections are common accident causal factors. Aircraft owners seeking bargain-priced mechanical services may see unairworthy aircraft returned to service. Inexperience and time pressure have caused mechanics and IA to overlook certain items. - To view further details and registration information for this webinar, click here.

28. IMC Club Meeting at Palomar Airport / EAA 286
After a brief Audio/Video presentation we ask "What Would You Do"? Everyone is encouraged to join in the discussion. Videos depicting actual flights that encountered challenges are chosen from a library provided by EAA and the presenter. In the ensuing discussion, often there's agreement on the steps to take, but that's not necessarily the goal - the value is in performing the mental exercise and developing an answer that's right for you.
Sometimes we argue it out - respectfully - and modify our plan of attack. The benefit is to think it through without the pressure of flying the plane. Pilots of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. Click the link below for more information and to register.
We have two scenarios for July. With the longer daylight hours of summer, It might be tempting to fly home after a long day of business meetings or vacation. How much can you take on in one day? The second scenario is about making a plan B after you discover GPS jamming along your route. Stay the course and change navaids? Or re-route?

29. First Passenger First Radio Failure - 7600 Over the Hawaiian Islands
Sara Gagne learned to fly there. Got her Private, passed her checkride, took her first flight with passengers after getting her ticket there. It was a sunset sightseeing flight.
It didn’t seem quite so idyllic as she neared the end of that first flight with a passenger: suddenly, unexpectedly, her radio failed. She was NORDO. Her home airport was beneath the Honolulu Bravo. And the sun was setting.
Sara, who’s now a CFI, will discuss what happened, what went through her mind, and what she did to cope with the situation. Join us in the classroom at the WVFC PAO clubhouse Wednesday evening July 29 at 7pm to hear more about this fascinating story.
