About the National Transportation Safety Board
Our Mission

Making transportation safer by conducting independent accident investigations, advocating safety improvements, and deciding pilots’ and mariners’ certification appeals.

Who is the NTSB?

The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent Federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in other modes of transportation – railroad, highway, marine and pipeline. The NTSB determines the probable cause of the accidents and issues safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents. In addition, the NTSB carries out special studies concerning transportation safety and coordinates the resources of the Federal Government and other organizations to provide assistance to victims and their family members impacted by major transportation disasters.

Jennifer L. Homendy (born November 26, 1971) is an American government official who is the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board in the Biden administration. Homendy has been the 44th member of the NTSB as of 2018.[1] She has been chairwoman since August 13, 2021.[2]

Early life and education

Homendy is a native of Plainville, Connecticut.[3] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pennsylvania State University and is a master's candidate Transportation Safety Administration from the Institute for Global Road Safety and Security at Clemson University.[4]

Career

In 1996 and 1997, Homendy worked as a government relations manager at the American Iron and Steel Institute.[5] From 1997 to 1999, she was a legislative representative for the AFL–CIO Transportation Trades Department. From 1999 to 2004, she was a legislative representative for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. From 2004 to 2018, she was a Democratic staff member for the United States House Transportation Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.[6] In 2018, she was appointed as a member of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Homendy has been a member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) since 2018 and has been the chair of the NTSB since 2021. U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Homendy for another five year term 14 May 2024.[1]
